'What are you going to do now?' Beckett said.
'We're going to have lunch and she's going to bring my little boy. Jesus, I don't think I've ever felt more nervous in my life.'
'You'll be fine,' Beckett said as he got another beer from the fridge.
'I have to say, I keep thinking I'm dreaming. Cheers.'
'You're not. This is what you wanted.'
Vince took the photo out of his jacket pocket again. Looked at the little boy smiling into the camera. It was only taken a few weeks back.
'I always wanted to be a dad, but I thought my life's purpose was to be going out with Jimmy at the weekend, getting pished and picking up slappers.'
'I'm so glad for you, mate. And now I have a nephew.' He was smiling when he stiffened slightly.
'What's wrong?' Vince asked.
'There's somebody outside.'
'What? I don't hear anything.'
'Listen.' Although they lived in Craigcrook, a decent neighbourhood of Edinburgh, they were perfectly aware that housebreakers preferred to travel from their own hovels to the rich pickings of upmarket areas.
Beckett took his brace off.
'What are you going to do? Hit them with it?' Vince said.
'I can fight better with it off. My knee's healing but if I have to fight a housebreaker, I want to be more mobile.'
'I hear you,' Vince said, opening the kitchen pantry door and bringing out a baseball bat. He kept them all over the house. No point in keeping one in the living room if they come through the kitchen and vice versa he had told his brother. Becket picked up a kitchen knife and Vince looked at him. Maybe Jimmy had been right about Beckett knowing his way around a set of kitchen knives.
Then he also heard the noise just outside the front door. Then they both saw the security light come on, through the glass panel at the top of the door.
'Let me open it,' Vince said. 'Keep the knife handy just in case. If it's some of those tossers from the schemes, we'll let them know they picked the wrong fucking house to break into.'
Vince grabbed the door lock, keeping the lights off, and with one hand, opened it quickly, letting it swing open while he grabbed the bat, preparing to strike.
'Hello, Vince,' Dawn said.
Beckett put the lights on behind him.
'Dawn. What are you doing here?' Vince said.
'The bat, Vince,' Beckett said when he saw the little boy standing behind his mother.
'Oh, you know, I was just in the area and since I was passing, I thought I'd pop in and see you.'
Vince was silent as he stood looking at little Vincent.
'Come in, Dawn,' Beckett said, nudging his brother out of the way. He saw she was carrying a small suitcase and he stepped forward to take it from her, keeping the knife hidden behind his back.
'Oh, Vince I don't know what to do,' she said, almost in tears.
'Come away in. Go through to the kitchen.' The little boy looked up at him as they came into the house.
'Couldn't wait for lunch?' he said, smiling.
